Beekeeping in Yugoslavia

The natural conditions for beekeeping in Yugoslavia are very good. People keep bees here from ancient times. Year 1859 there was about 170.000 hives without moveable frames in Serbia, and in 1949 about 360.000.

Nowadays, in Yugoslavia (in Serbia mostly) there are about 500.000 hives and 35.000 beekeepers. There are about 166 beekeeper associations (beekeepers are organized in townships).

Apis mellifera var. Carnica is Yugoslav breed of honeybee.

The Langstroth Root and Dadant Blat hives are prevailing types of hives.
